A special lecture "To become familiar with cultural property" at Hachigaoka junior high school (Kyoto City)
~High-resolution facsimile of “Eight-Planked Bridge” by Ogata Korin~

On November 12, Kyoto National Museum and the Kyoto Culture Association together held a special lecture, using the high-resolution facsimile of “Eight-Planked Bridge” by Ogata Korin, the original work is owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, for 36 seventh grade students of Hachigaoka junior high school in Kyoto.
The lecture was held during the ethic class. The ethical educational research conference in Kinki area was also held on that day and Hachigaoka junior high school was chosen to open its classes, therefore the school opened this special lecture for 20 ethic class teachers from Kinki area.
At the lecture, Dr. Mizutani, an associate fellow of Kyoto National Museum, explained about the screens and the artist, showing students the High-resolution facsimile and later , with their teacher, students thought about the artist’s feeling, with what feeling, the artist created the work.

A special lecture "To become familiar with cultural property" at Anshouji junior high school (Kyoto City)
~ Virtual Reality of Gold Pavilion and Silver Pavilion~

On November 11, TOPPAN PRINTING CO., LTD., and Kyoto Culture Association together held a special lecture, using Virtual Reality of Gold Pavilion and Silver Pavilion, for 120 eighth grade students, among 4 classes, of Anshouji junior high school in Kyoto.

At the lecture, volunteer instructor, Mr. Nobuki Goto, a graduate student of Osaka Prefecture University showed students Virtual Reality, explaining about the buildings and gardens of Gold Pavilion and Silver Pavilion.
He told students the feature of the different style of trilaminar structure of Gold Pavilion and also the garden view from the inside of the building, which Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu would appreciate at that time. About Silver Pavilion which was built a century later from Gold Pavilion, he explained about the building which Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa built with his aesthetics, and also he told student about Tougudou, the building where its room style: the shoin style, became the model of today’s Japanese style room.

"Tsuzuri Project Exhibition"
~High Resolution Facsimiles of Japanese Art Abroad~ at Kenninji temple

There will be a special exhibition of high resolution facsimiles of cultural properties at Kenninji temple in Kyoto, from November 20 through December 5, 2010.
The exhibition displays 8 facsimiles of cultural properties created under Tsuzuri Project, the project organized by the Kyoto Culture Association and Canon Inc. The exhibition mainly displays high resolution facsimiles of Japanese art abroad. At the morning of every Saturday, Sunday and a public holiday during the periods, there will be kids programs for elementary and junior high school students which offer them one hour gallery tour.

Period: November 20, 2010 (Sat) ~ December 5, 2010 (Sun)
Hours: 10am~5pm (the ticket desk close at 4:30pm)
Place: Kenninji temple
Admission: ¥500; High school and junior high school students: ¥300;
elementary school students and under are free.

Kids Program: November 20 (Sat), 21 (Sun), 23 (Tue), 27 (Sat), 28 (Sun) and December 4 (Sat), 5 (Sun). Starts from 9am.

Demonstration by a master of gold leaf, Hiroto Rakusho: November 20 (Sat), 21 (Sun), 23 (Tue), 11am and 2pm.

A special lecture "To become familiar with cultural property" at Saga elementary school (Kyoto City)
~High-resolution facsimile of "The Wind and Thunder Gods" by Tawaraya Sotatsu~

On October 5, Kyoto National Museum and the Kyoto Culture Association together held a special lecture, using high-resolution facsimile of the National Treasure "The Wind and Thunder Gods" by Tawaraya Sotatsu, owned by Kenninji. The lecture was held for a total of 100 Saga elementary school students (sixth grade) and their parents.

The theme of the lecture was "Learn the life in Kyoto during Edo periods through the folding screens, the Wind and Thunder Gods." While students had been learnt that the center of the Edo periods was Edo, where is Tokyo now, and the period was "the period of the masses," at the lecture, the teacher explained that Kyoto was also economically and culturally rich so that the folding screen "The Wind and Thunder Gods" was created in Kyoto.
The teachers were volunteers of university and graduate school students, called "Cultural Property Sommelier" who had taken schooling at Kyoto National museum and also Dr. Mizutani, anassociated fellow of Kyoto National Museum.

A total of 32 sliding door facsimiles of Important Cultural Property, "Landscapes" by Hasegawa Tohaku, owned by Entokuin temple, have been completed.

A total of 32 sliding door facsimiles of Important Cultural Property,"Landscapes" by Hasegawa Tohaku, owned by Entokuin temple, have been completed and donated to the temple on October 1. The original properties, 16 panels were brought to Kyoto National Museum and 16 panels were to Ishikawa Nanao Art Museum as to preserve and pass them to future generations. The high resolution facsimiles will be displayed at the temple until December 8, 2010.

~High-resolution facsimile of “The Wind and Thunder Gods” by Tawaraya Sotatsu~

On June 29, Kyoto National Museum and the Kyoto Culture Association together held a special lecture, using high-resolution facsimile of the National Treasure “The Wind and Thunder Gods” by Tawaraya Sotatsu, owned by Kenninji. The lecture was held for 120 sixth grade students, among 4 classes, of Kinkaku elementary school.

At the lecture, students learnt Sotatsu’s dynamic depiction by imitating the postures of the Wind and Thunder gods. Also they create conversation between two gods, and through these works, students concentrated on observing the screens and later they reported what they found from the screens. In addition, students were divided into separate groups and each group created their own composition of “The Wind and Thunder Gods” by using miniature figures of both gods, to think about how unique Sotastu’s composition was. The work aimed at finding out how composition of art would change the implication of the work itself.

The lecture was led by Dr. Mizutani, an associated fellow of Kyoto National Museum, also volunteers of university and graduate school students, named “Cultural Property Sommelier” supported the teacher. Children enjoyed appreciating screens, imagining the depicted situation, such as the relationship between two gods, where they were and what they were doing. On the same day, to respond to the demand made by them, we held the exactly same lecture for children’s parents.

“Digital Archive Exhibition” at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa now ended

“Digital Archive Exhibition” at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa came to an end on June 6 after a one-week exhibition. During the period, about 6,018 people visited the exhibition. There were many participants in “Kids’ sketch competition” and Gallery talk. Thank you very much for visiting our exhibition.

“Digital Archive Exhibition” at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa

There will be a special exhibition, “Digital Archive Exhibition,” featuring the high-resolution facsimiles of cultural properties, at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa from June 1 through June 6.

The exhibition is held by Kyoto Culture Association and Kanazawa International Culture & Communication Institute, and displays 19 high-resolution facsimiles of cultural properties, including the work of artists representing Japan such as the Rimpa school, Kano school and also Hasegawa Tohaku, who marks 400th anniversary from his death in 2010. During the period, there will be “Kids’ sketch competition” and gallery talk so please visit our exhibition.

Kids’sketch competition:
There will be a sketch competition, which is designated for junior high school students and under. Winners of the competition will receive gifts. We offer drawing paper and colored pencil at the entrance of the exhibition room so please join the program. Application will be accepted from June 1 through June 5 and awards ceremony is planned on June 6, 3pm.

Stage 3, Donation Ceremony and Special Exhibition

On March 26 at Kenninji temple, Kyoto Culture Association held a ceremony to unveil and donate high-resolution facsimiles completed through the Tsuzuri project: Cultural Heritage Inheritance Project, which was launched by the Association and Canon Inc.

The works completed in Stage 3 are as follows:

“Dragon and Tiger” by Sesson Shukei: Collection of The Cleveland Museum of Art; Donated to Sounji Temple

“Waves at Matsushima” by Tawaraya Sotatsu: Collection of Freer Gallery of Art; Donated to Shounji Temple
“Birds and Animals in the Flower Garden” by Ito Jakuchu: Collection of Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art; Donated to Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art
